One of my favourite places to decompress is the sunset lookout - an uninterrupted 180-degree view of the Indian Ocean, and the promise of a new day on the horizon. New beginnings. New learnings. Here, I can let the day's troubles go, acknowledge the challenges, and notice moments for gratitude and connection with loved ones, friends, colleagues, patients, and clients, while momentarily appreciating the wonder of nature's beauty.

Experiencing burnout

Like many health professionals, I have lived through chronic burnout - struggling to get out of bed, sore body, weight loss, restless sleep, exercising just to relieve anxious energy. It took its toll, and I had to pay attention. The point I realised I needed serious help was the point I realised something serious needed to change.

Change is not always easy, but I made it happen - thankfully no blood, but there was plenty of mental sweat and lots of tears, along with years of therapy, meditation, self-reflection, journalling, research, and community support - my friends, my family, my neighbours, colleagues, loved ones near and far.

I have over 25 years' experience across the Australian and English healthcare systems, with a background in cancer care - supporting people through diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and challenging life transitions. Having worked across community health centres, acute teaching hospitals, regional hospice care, research and education, I understand just how important it is to help ourselves stay as well as we can, whether we have health issues or not. Only we can do something about it for ourselves, and more often than not, we have a choice.

With lived experience, I am also passionate about helping others navigate burnout and prolonged stress by reconnecting to their own internal resources and rebuilding resilience and self-autonomy, preventing further burnout and stress related symptoms.
